Veterans need YOU this weekend: Volunteer for the National Veterans Golden Age Games

The National Veterans Golden Age Games are coming to Hawai’i for the first time! Join the Friends of the Natatorium: We need you to help to make these games an incredible success.

This sports festival for veterans 55 and older, to be held from this Thursday, May 26, through Tuesday, May 31, is drawing more than 700 veterans to our state from across the country. They’ll compete in 14 events from dominoes and checkers to bowling and table tennis to swimming, cycling, golf, shot put and discus. There are seven age groups, and divisions for veterans who use wheelchairs or who are visually impaired.

Sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs and now in their 25th year, the Golden Age Games help keep our veterans physically active and demonstrate to all older Americans how sports, fitness and recreation activities make for a great quality of life as we age.

Putting on these games is a mammoth logistical job, and the VA still needs volunteers to make it all run smoothly.

Here are some of the areas where a few hours from you will make a world of difference for our veteran athletes:

–Friday, May 27: Golf, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. (80 volunteers needed)
–Friday, May 27: Checkers, 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 12 noon-5 p.m. (35 volunteers needed)

I am a retired veteran and I did participated in 2002 Topeka Kansas and won the Gold medal for Golf. I would like to participate again for the coming years. Could you list of all the future years and places will be held? I sure appreciate you help. I am not able to participate, due to advance planning for trip. Thank you kindly. Pat Barut
